New Dimensions at the VinAgora Wine Competition

The 26th VinAgora International Wine Competition, like in previous years, welcomes the submission of all wines this year, regardless of variety, type, category, or style. The competition aims to showcase the broad spectrum of wines, providing a platform for the diverse representation of wine culture on both a domestic and international level.

As a proud member of VinoFed and partner of Wine-Searcher, the VinAgora International Wine Competition is enhancing its program with a novel element. In 2025, the competition will focus special professional attention on two remarkable grape varieties: the globally popular Sauvignon blanc and the highly esteemed Blaufränkisch (Kékfrankos, Limberger, Frankovka, Crna Francova) of the Danube region. Alongside this spotlight, an exceptionally robust promotional campaign will also be launched. Producers from around the globe are encouraged to enter their Sauvignon blanc wines, while Kékfrankos entries are particularly anticipated from Central Europe.

Blaufränkisch– The gem of the Danube region's tradition

Kékfrankos

Blaufränkisch also known as Kékfrankos, Limberger, or Frankovka, is one of the most significant red grape varieties in the Carpathian Basin and along the Danube region. Known for its rich character, balanced acidity, and elegant spiciness, Kékfrankos has long captured the hearts of winemakers and wine lovers alike. Its ability to express terroir with finesse makes it uniquely reflective of its growing region, showcasing diverse profiles depending on the local climate and soil. Kékfrankos wines appeal to a broad audience, offering light, fruity options for everyday enjoyment and aged, complex expressions that shine in fine gastronomy. This versatility, paired with its strong regional ties, solidifies Kékfrankos as an icon of Central European wine culture.

Sauvignon blanc – The globetrotting white variety

Sauvignon blanc

Sauvignon blanc is one of the most renowned and beloved white grape varieties worldwide. Originating from France’s Loire Valley and Bordeaux, it has become a flagship variety in wine regions spanning from New Zealand and California to South Africa. Sauvignon blanc wines captivate with their vibrant acidity, freshness, and aromatic complexity. Alongside citrus, green apple, and elderflower notes, they often reveal exotic fruits or herbal undertones. One of its greatest qualities is its ability to convey the characteristics of its growing environment: cooler climates produce green, mineral-driven wines, while warmer regions yield tropical, fruit-forward expressions.

Why these two varieties?
Both Blaufränkisch and Sauvignon blanc beautifully embody the balance of tradition and innovation. Kékfrankos, with its deep regional roots and versatility, serves as a symbol of Central European winemaking. Meanwhile, Sauvignon blanc represents the vibrant, modern appeal of contemporary global wine culture.
